Overview

Practical Coding Experience: Inpatient provides hands-on coding practice coupled with detailed guidance on correct code assignment. Using Libman Education’s proprietary Coding Workspace™ format, learners sharpen their coding skills on real-world inpatient cases. Coding Workspace™ will make you truly workforce-ready!

Learn to ‘think like a coder!’  Practical Coding Experience: Inpatient duplicates the viewing of typed documents in the electronic health record (EHR) and requires the coder to apply a Facility Coding Policy, the conventions and Official Coding Guidelines for the ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS code sets as codes are assigned.

Progressive learning!  Starting with coding of short cases featuring limited diagnoses and procedures, learners progress to coding larger cases with multiple interconnected diagnoses and several related procedures. The cases are easy to navigate and the steps are intuitive. Three options for progressive learning:

It’s like having a personal coding mentor!  Practical Coding Experience: Inpatient simulates the educational method used during in-person training.  Learners receive immediate feedback on codes assigned with detailed rationales. Use the in-course feedback button for additional coaching from Libman Education educators.

The learning does not stop once the coding is done! Each case is annotated with information that helps the coder identify where all the necessary details to support code selection are found in the documentation.  LibmanLightbox™ modules provide additional vital information to enhance the coder’s depth of understanding.

Plus more!  Short quizzes help reinforce learning every step of the way.  A detailed course completion certificate identifies the concepts mastered in the cases, suitable for use during the interview process as proof of experience.

How it works: Libman Education’s proprietary Coding Workspace™ uses real-world inpatient cases to sharpen coding skills and make you truly workforce ready! The learner will:

  • Access the work queue of carefully selected cases that demonstrate key concepts and coding challenges
  • Evaluate the documentation, determine what to abstract, and apply UHDDS definitions to assign both ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and ICD-10-PCS procedure codes
  • “Finalize” code selection and receive immediate feedback identifying correct codes and any additional codes missed
  • Re-review the documentation now annotated to show where the necessary details to support code selection are found
  • View LibmanLightbox™ modules that provide additional vital information to enhance the coder’s depth of understanding

Inpatient coders require foundational knowledge in ICD-10-CM coding of diagnoses and ICD-10-PCS coding of hospital inpatient procedures. Course work in these topics is essential prior to commencing Practical Coding Experience: Inpatient.

ICD-10-CM: Diagnosis Coding
Thorough and in-depth command of ICD-10-CM coding is essential for anyone seeking a position as a medical record coder. ICD-10-CM: Diagnosis Coding is a comprehensive program on the structure, function, and application of ICD-10-CM organized by body system.

ICD-10-PCS: Medical and Surgical Coding
Introduction to the structure and design of the ICD-10-PCS system and coding guidelines. Course provides education on assigning codes within the medical and surgical section of ICD-10-PCS, with complete education on the 31 root operations used in the coding process.

ICD-10-PCS: Med/Surg-related and Ancillary
How to code procedures in the Medical and Surgical-related and Ancillary sections of ICD-10-PCS, including obstetrics, imaging, mental health, and more.

The level of effort to complete one of these courses, start to finish, is equivalent to 3-6 CEUs and should take you approximately 3-18 hours to complete. Remember: You have access to the course materials for the full 16-week enrollment period and we encourage you to re-review any materials that are helpful to you.

Certificate of Completion
Upon successful completion of the course work, student will be able to download a Libman Education Certificate of Completion. The Certificate of Completion will list the course as awarding between 3-6 CEUs.

“Thank you so much for providing the LibmanLightbox™ education. They are always wonderful!” — Nancie DeCourcy, Inpatient Coder, Houston Methodist

“Using the courses along with my college curriculum would have left me feeling much more confident in my understanding of coding and my skill in applying codes to cases. The Libman Lightbox learning modules that are included really enhance the courses by expanding on topics for greater understanding. I think students and colleges that use the courses will see significant improvements in coder accuracy and understanding.” — Andrea Hick, RHIT

“This is the best course I have taken with Libman. The way this was set up with the cases and immediate feedback was fantastic.” — Anonymous
