ICD-10-CM: General Coding Guidelines provides the foundational knowledge of the guidelines that govern the application of ICD-10-CM codes to ensure accurate reporting of diagnoses.  Written by nationally-recognized coding authority, Therese (Teri) Jorwic, MPH, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P, FAHIMA, the course focuses on the general guidelines used in inpatient, outpatient, and professional fee settings.

ICD-10-CM: General Coding Guidelines offers instruction on the following:

  • Guidelines structure and organization
  • General coding guidelines that apply to most or all diagnoses. (Note:  Guidelines specific to diagnostic families are covered in the courses on those diagnoses.)
  • Application of multiple and combination coding rules
  • Coding for specific circumstances such as impending/threatened, borderline, symptoms and sequala diagnoses
  • Determining the appropriate principal diagnosis and reportable additional diagnoses for impatient encounters using UHDDS definitions and coding guidelines

The level of effort to complete this course, start to finish, is equivalent to 2 CEUs and should take you approximately 2-6 hours to complete. Remember: You have access to the course materials for the full 16-week enrollment period and we encourage you to re-review any materials that are helpful to you.

Certificate of Completion
Upon successful completion of the course work, student will be able to download a Libman Education Certificate of Completion. The Certificate of Completion will list the course as awarding 2 CEUs.

AHIMA: 2 CEUs
This course has been approved for continuing education unit(s) (CEUs) for use in fulfilling the continuing education requirements of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). AI Workforce Development Strategist

Teri Jorwic is Libman Education’s AI Workforce Development Strategist, leading the effort to recreate medical record coder training for the new requirements of an AI-supported healthcare industry. Teri is author of training and reference materials to support skilled coders, CDI specialists and others who require in-depth and detailed understanding of the coding systems and their use.

Teri is a subject matter expert in ICD-10 and HCPCS/CPT classifications and reimbursement systems. Teri is co-author along with Lynn Kuehn of ICD-10-PCS: An Applied Approach, which is updated and published yearly by AHIMA and received the 2014 AHIMA Literary Legacy Award. Teri is the author of numerous articles and publications related to proper and compliant coding practices. Teri’s commitment to training for medical record coders includes experience as an educator and consultant with decades of experience in academic, vendor and consulting organizations.

Teri is a committed HIM professional and has spent her career advancing the practice of medical record coding. According to Teri: “At this particular juncture, with AI support tools changing the role of medical record coders, we are once again faced with a challenge of reinventing ourselves as professionals and retooling our profession in service of the healthcare industry.
