Job boards are often the first step a job seeker uses to find their next position. But ultimate success may depend on what you do before you hit the job board. Through networking and other ways of laying the ground work you increase your chances of finding and landing the job you need.

Here are 5 techniques to organize and optimize your job search:

Treat the posted job as the last step, not the first

Before applying, look up people who work in that department or organization. You might already know someone.

Ask for a quick 15–20 minute conversation to learn about culture, team structure, and what they value in new hires.

Use informational interviews strategically

Prepare 4–5 questions: “What skills do you most rely on?” “What does success look like in your role?” “What do you wish you had known early in your career?”

End with: “Is there anyone else you recommend I talk to?” and “What’s one thing you would suggest I do next?”

Align your résumé with what you hear

Take the skills, phrases, and priorities mentioned in conversations and reflect them in your résumé and LinkedIn profile (where true).

This makes your application feel like a match, not a generic submission.

Create a simple outreach routine

Consistency beats intensity. Each week:

  • 2–3 new connection requests (with a short note)
  • 1–2 follow ups with existing contacts
  • 1 post, comment, or share that shows your interests and learning

Track your touchpoints

Keep a simple spreadsheet or note with names, where you met, date of last contact, and next steps. This keeps networking from feeling random and helps you follow through.

While much is out of your control when searching for a job, keeping yourself organized and moving forward gives you the best chance of success.
