The ICD-10-PCS update for April 1, 2023 has 34 new codes with no additional deletions or revisions. These updates are found in the Medical and Surgical section, Administration and New Technology sections of PCS. There are no guideline changes for April 1.
In the Medical and Surgical section, the 02L and 04L Occlusion tables have been updated to include the open approach for the temporary use of an occlusion balloon in the aorta. The qualifier of J, Temporary was added to this system in 2018 to identify this temporary use but only the percutaneous approach was added at that time. This year brings us the open approach for the temporary use of balloons like the Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion Aorta (REBOA) balloon or CODA balloon to help achieve hemostasis.
The 0P5 and 0Q5 tables for laser interstitial thermal therapy were updated to include body part values for the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacrum vertebral bones involved with spinal tumors.
In the Administration section, the ability to provide a blood transfusion into the bone marrow has been missing since the implementation of the system. The seven major types of blood products were added to the 302 table for transfusion into the bone marrow using the percutaneous approach. This is commonly called transfusion through intraosseous access.
In the New Technology section, the XW0 table for Introduction has two additions. REGN-COV2 monoclonal antibodies can now be administered into the subcutaneous tissue using the percutaneous approach.
The other new code is for Sabizabulin, a new anti-viral, anti-inflammatory drug to treat COVID-19 which is administered orally or through a G-tube or J-tube.
The XW1 table for Transfusion has one addition for Exagamglogene Autotemcel, a new treatment for β-Thalassemia and sickle cell disease by modifying the patient’s blood cell precursors and transfusing them back into the patient.
We have new entries in the Body Part Key for the Space Retzius and for the intracranial portion of the vertebral arteries.
The Device Key has been updated to include an additional DynaNail product called Helix.
I’ve updated Lynn’s Expanded Substance Key to include these two new drugs. Download your copy from within the free short course on the April 1, 2023 ICD-10-PCS updates. Click here.
