People say networking is all about knowing people, and yes, that is true, but it is also a great way to show others what you offer by letting them get to know you. How you present yourself and display your confidence matters. You can know many names, but if those names do not know you, know your strengths, see your confidence, believe you are approachable, and understand what sets you apart from others around you, just knowing those names will not get you anywhere.

Here is my recipe for easy activities that let people get to know you better (and maybe decide to hire you!):

Share your insights

Post short reflections on webinars, conferences, or articles: key takeaways, what surprised you, and how you’ll apply it.

Always keep your posts positive and supportive.

Tag speakers, organizations, or associations when appropriate to increase visibility.

Get involved in professional organizations

Join student or early career committees, help with events, or volunteer to moderate a session or assist with social media.

Being “on the team” makes you more visible to established professionals and leaders. It also gives you a great excuse to reach out to other team members and build rapport.

Ask for small, visible opportunities

Offer to co present a small portion of a session, share a case study, or help with a poster.

These chances showcase your professionalism and reliability in front of a wider audience.

Ask for recommendations and endorsements

After a positive project, class, or internship, ask if the person would be comfortable writing a short LinkedIn recommendation to endorse a couple of your skills.

This builds social proof and boosts your confidence.

Remember, building your professional network is a marathon. You’ve got to be in it for the long haul.
