Overview

Codes change yearly! We take seriously our obligation to provide you with accurate and up-to-date instruction. This course is updated for the 2025 code set.

Practical Coding Experience: Emergency Department provides hands-on coding practice in ICD-10-CM and CPT coding coupled with instant feedback and explanations. Using Libman Education’s proprietary Coding Workspace™ format, students sharpen their skills as they learn to follow correct coding pathways and apply coding guidelines with confidence.

Twenty cases, carefully selected and representing the most common conditions encountered in an Emergency Department, are comprised of 10 diagnosis-only cases for coding in ICD-10-CM and 10 additional cases with procedures for coding in both ICD-10-CM and CPT. Conditions include:

  • Otitis media
  • Upper respiratory infection
  • Fractures/Dislocations
  • Poisonings
  • Foreign bodies
  • and more!

What makes this course different?

  • Emphasis on understanding and applying Official Coding Guidelines for both CPT and ICD-10-CM as well as other resources coding professionals should know and use when coding
  • The Practical Coding Experience simulated environment includes coding policies and procedures that mimic the health care industry
  • Cases designed to make the connection from clinical indicators to coding and suggest when a coding query might be necessary
  • “Quick Tips” and “Bottom Line” features help learners quickly grasp concepts that govern code selection
  • BONUS! Proprietary and helpful Decision Trees identify coding pathways and documentation elements. Rather than a “this is the correct code” approach, the process of code selection is illustrated.
  • BONUS! LibmanLightbox™ targeted learning modules enhance the learning experience with clinical snapshots, videos of surgical procedures, and easy to understand coding guidance:
    • Reporting Additional Diagnosis (ICD-10-CM)
    • External Cause Coding (ICD-10-CM
    • Wound Repairs (CPT)
    • Fracture Care in the Emergency Department (CPT)
    • Foreign Bodies (CPT)
    • Coding Signs and Symptoms (ICD-10-CM)

How does it work?

  • View LibmanLightbox™ modules that orient the coder to the challenges of Emergency Department coding and enhance the coder’s depth of understanding
  • Access the work queue of twenty carefully selected cases that demonstrate key concepts and coding
  •  challenges
  • Evaluate the documentation to support assignment of ICD-10-CM diagnoses codes and CPT® procedure codes for cases with procedures
  • “Finalize” your code selection and receive immediate feedback identifying correct codes and any additional codes missed
  • Re-review the documentation now annotated to show where the necessary details to support code selection are found
  • Realistic workplace Coding Quality Measure: 90% performance on final assessment required to earn CEU

Practical Coding Experience: Emergency Department provides hands-on coding practice coupled with detailed guidance on correct code assignment.

Cases include these Diagnoses:

  • Otitis Media
  • Upper Respiratory Infection

Gail I. Smith, MA, RHIA, CCS-PGail I. Smith, MA, RHIA, CCS-P

Gail Smith, president of Gail I. Smith Consulting, is a nationally recognized coding educator. For most of her career Gail was an associate professor and director of the health information management (HIM) program at the University of Cincinnati and HIM program director at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. Gail is a currently a consultant with a software company specializing in medical terminologies. Gail has authored several textbooks, including Basic Procedural Terminology and HCPCS Coding published by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

An advocate for advanced coder training, Gail is the author of several titles for Libman Education related to CPT coding including both instructional courses organized by body system (breast, spinal fusion, and others) and hands-on Practical Coding Experience courses designed to increase both quality of coding and productivity.

According to Gail: “One cannot possibly teach every coding scenario a coder will experience in their career. That is why coding education needs to focus instead on how to arrive at an accurate and defensible code assignment. It is the difference between learning to fish, and being given a fish. If you learn to code instead of being given answers to memorize, you will be able to arrive at the complete codes more quickly and with greater confidence.”

“Thank you so much for providing the LibmanLightbox™ education. They are always wonderful!” — Nancie DeCourcy, Inpatient Coder, Houston Methodist

“I want a new and innovative experience for our students and the ‘Coding Workspace’ is something that will help beginning students get the necessary real world experience and also enable them to add this experience to their resumes.” — Tanda Emanuel, MBA, RHIT, CPC, Program Coordinator/Instructor, Health Information Management/Electronic Health Records, Health Sciences Division, Hagerstown Community College

“So glad to hear that Gail will be leading this course. She is an exceptional educator.” — HIM Practitioner, on Gail’s course CPT: Introduction to Procedural Coding

“I have completed the CPT update course and loved it. Pairing the audio with the visual works well for my learning style. It was well worth the money for me to spend. Much better than the quickie, run-through-everything-in-an-hour CEU offerings work allows us.” — Karin A., MPS, RHIT, CPC-I, CPC, CMA, PBT, Professional Coding Quality Specialist, on Gail’s course CPT® Code Updates

“I recently completed the CPT Update. I thought it was a wonderful course. It is so important as a coder that I know and understand the changes each year. This course was very helpful to me.” — Marcelette on Gail’s course CPT® Code Updates

“Gail Smith is one of my favorite resources, the work that your team is doing is outstanding and professional, Thanks again, for your help” — HIM Coder

“I’m pleasantly surprised at your response … really didn’t think I would receive anything at all, so, thank you! I believe that alone says a lot for Libman Education. I would recommend you to other coding professionals.” — Jennifer Jones, CPC

“LOVEEE Libman! Very happy with the classes I’ve taken.” — Linda C.

“Any of Libman Education’s courses are worth time and cost. Always walk away with a useable, clarity or reinforcement of subject matter.”

“I greatly appreciate this support and outstanding customer service!” — former student
