Graduating with a degree in Health Information Management (HIM) and preparing to achieve a credential in medical coding (Libman Education offers great CCS and CCS-P exam reviews including my CCS course with live instruction!) are significant milestones that represent the foundation of a promising coding career. Each milestone deserves recognition and celebration.
The next crucial step is landing that first job, and that can be challenging. Breaking into the industry often requires perseverance, creativity, and sometimes a little luck. Every coder has faced this same challenge; the first job is the hardest to land.
A successful coder is distinguished by how they use their time while waiting for opportunities. Simply waiting and hoping for a positive response is not enough to move forward. Instead, take a proactive approach by building and refining your skills:
- Review Coding Guidelines Regularly: Coding standards are updated annually. Staying current with the latest guidelines is crucial to maintaining competency and demonstrating your commitment to the profession.
- Study Coding Books Thoroughly: Dive deep into the codes, rules, and exceptions. Understanding the logic behind coding structures is vital since these codes are your primary tools throughout your career.
- Take Additional Coding Courses: Continuing education helps deepen your knowledge and keeps you updated on industry changes.
- Seek Practical Coding Opportunities: If you are currently employed in a healthcare setting, ask to practice coding in your spare time, ensuring your efforts do not disrupt daily operations.
- Follow Coding Blogs and Resources: Staying informed about industry trends and topics can provide valuable talking points during interviews. For example, Libman Education newsletters are a great way to know what is happening in the industry and the profession.
Above all, be patient, optimistic, and persistent. Remember, your first coding job is unique—you only get one, and it lays the foundation for your entire career. With dedication and proactive effort, you will successfully position yourself to enter the field and thrive.
Embrace and enjoy every stage of your career progression, starting with your education, continuing through your job search and first job, and extending into all future endeavors.
