Inpatient Auditing Practicum provides hands-on experience in Inpatient Auditing. Students will audit 50-100 carefully selected cases using a set of criteria to evaluate the accuracy of inpatient coding practice and proper reimbursement.

Written in collaboration with major medical employers, Inpatient Auditing Practicum provides real world skills in demand by employers:

  • Conduct an audit through application of auditing principles to a variety of inpatient records.
  •  Accurately complete an audit worksheet.
  •  Accurately analyze audit findings.
  •  Communicate the results of the audit in writing by submission of an Audit Summary Report.
  •  Verbally communicate the audit results by submission of two PowerPoint-led, recorded presentations, each of which is appropriate for a specific audience.
  •  Submit a PowerPoint (file only, not a recorded presentation) for a third audience.

Inpatient Auditing Practicum provides hands-on experience as an auditor:

  • Students perform audits on 50 to 100 cases using a set of criteria to evaluate the accuracy of inpatient coding practice and proper reimbursement.
  • Presentation of information.  An opportunity to develop written and verbal report presentation techniques.
  • Both the technical and soft skills required to be a good auditor

Experience and knowledge of Inpatient Coding
Three years of inpatient acute care coding experience within the last five years.

Students may wish to refresh their knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10PCS coding prior to attempting the course. (additional fee applies)

Certification
Current RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CPC credential

  • Students are required to complete the entire course, including all workbooks, unit tests, module exams, specialty books, and practicum reports within the enrollment period or within the period for which extensions have been paid.
  • Students are required to achieve 85% or better on all module and course exams in order to be eligible to participate in the practicum module. Completion of all components of the practicum at a score of 85% or higher is required for successful completion of the program.
  • Students are allowed two submissions of each module and course exam and one submission of the audit summary report and recorded presentations. Retakes may be taken after a required five business day preparation period following notification of prior exam results.
