What about CEUs?

Unfortunately, AHIMA does not award CEUs for credential preparation or review courses; AAPC will not grant CEUs for courses related to non-AAPC credentials. The level of effort to complete this course, start to finish, is equivalent to 8 CEUs and should take you approximately 8-24 hours to complete. Remember: You have access to the course materials for the full enrollment period and we encourage you to re-review any materials that are helpful to you as you prepare for the actual exam.

AHIMA’s updating of the CCA Exam lags behind changes to the coding sets. Typically, AHIMA coding credential exams use the current year guidelines and code sets until May 1 of the following year. AHIMA has not yet announced the date for launching the FY2021 exam but based on past years it is expected that AHIMA coding credential exams will test on the 2020 guidelines and code sets until May 1, 2021.

Which year CCA Exam Review will I need? It depends on when you will be sitting for your credential:

  • If you are planning to take the exam prior to May 1, 2021, you should study the FY2020 guidelines and codes and prepare with the 2020 CCA Exam Review.
  • If you are planning to take the exam May 1, 2021 or later, you should study the FY2021 guidelines and codes and prepare with the 2021 CCA Exam Review.

Please refer to the AHIMA website (www.ahima.org) for updates on the exam status and the list of allowable code books for your exam. Refer to the PearsonVue website (https://home.pearsonvue.com/ahima) for the specifics of what you need to know when registering for an exam.

Gail Smith, president of Gail I. Smith Consulting, is a nationally recognized coding educator. For most of her career Gail was an associate professor and director of the health information management (HIM) program at the University of Cincinnati and HIM program director at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. Gail is a currently a consultant with a software company specializing in medical terminologies. Gail has authored several textbooks, including Basic Procedural Terminology and HCPCS Coding published by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

An advocate for advanced coder training, Gail is the author of several titles for Libman Education including CPT: Introduction to Procedural Coding and two courses on the unique challenge of CPT coding in the pediatric setting: CPT for Pediatrics and CPT for Pediatrics: Advanced Orthopedic Coding. According to Gail: “One cannot possibly teach every coding scenario a coder will experience in their career. That is why coding education needs to focus instead on how to arrive at an accurate and defensible code assignment. It is the difference between learning to fish, and being given a fish. If you learn to code instead of being given answers to memorize, you will be able to arrive at the complete codes more quickly and with greater confidence.”

“Thank you! Your CCA Exam Review course is awesome! I knew I wanted to go down the AHIMA road and finding your class has been fantastic. I am taking the CCA test in a few weeks (super nervous!) and eventually (with a lot of studying and fingers crossed) I plan to take your CCS review class. Thanks again.” — Natalie A.

“After leaving coding for 14 years to raise children I decided to get a CCA certification from AHIMA – and I believe the Libman CCA course helped me pass.” — Nat A.

“I’m so excited I passed the CCA exam Dec 10th. Thanks again for all your help.” — Paula C.

“Don’t take the CCA Exam until you have taken this course! I never would have passed the exam if it wasn’t for this course.”

“Just wanted to let you know my daughter passed her CCA today with a score of 334 (needed a 300 to pass). She attributes her success to you and your online courses. I am a very proud momma as you can tell. Thank you sincerely from the bottom of my heart for all the encouragement you and your staff have given her. I think the CCA for her was something she needed to prove to herself she can do this! Thank you!”

“I am just finishing up with the CCA prep course. I took it because I was so overwhelmed with trying to study without some structure. The course has really helped me stay on track, and I would recommend it to anyone preparing for the CCA exam. Best of luck to you!”

“There is definitely a need for this preparation course to bridge the classroom learning to preparing for and taking the actual CCA exam.”

“Hi! I just wanted to let you know that I took the Certification Exam yesterday and ……. I PASSED!!!!!! What a relief…“

“This course was very informative and well organized. It was a necessity for me in preparing for the CCA exam.”

“There is a lot of knowledge obtained in this 8-week course that really helped me prepare for the CCA Exam.”

“I have a good news to share with you. I have taken CCA exam and pass! Thank you for you help and guidance. The CCA online prep. Program was so helpful and helps me know where to focus. I appreciate it. I will be back for CCS Prep and ICD 10 courses.”

“The online CCA Exam Review course was very helpful and informative. I-10 is a whole new ball game, but I am sure your course will be as thorough as the I-9 was. Thanks again!”

“I passed my CCA exam on Saturday. Your Prep course was helpful.”

“I went on Saturday and I passed!!! I scored 319! You were the game changer, you completely changed the way I answered those questions. I just wanted to share my exciting news with you. Have a wonderful day.”

“I wanted to let you know that I finally took the CCA exam today and passed it. Also, I felt that my education with Libman more than prepared me for the exam. I had a hard time deciding which exam (the CCA or CCS) to take due to my extensive experience in outpatient but my lack of experience with inpatient and HIM. So I thought it would be best to start with the CCA.”

Which year code books will I need? It depends on when you will be sitting for your credential:

The ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT coding systems update at least yearly. The ICD-10 code sets are updated for discharges October 1 of each year. The CPT code set changes are effective January 1 of each year.

AHIMA’s updating of the CCA and CCS Exams lags behind changes to the coding sets. Typically, AHIMA coding credential exams use the current year guidelines and code sets until May 1 of the following year. For example, the CCA and CCS exams will test on FY 2020 codes and guidelines until May 1 of 2021.

* Please note:  Candidates for the CCA exam are required to bring the correct edition of code books to the test center. Candidates who do not bring the correct code books to the test center will not be allowed to test and will forfeit their exam fees.  The allowable code books are published on the AHIMA website (see “2020 List of Allowable Code Books”) https://www.ahima.org/certification-careers/certifications/
