New Technology Substances Abound in FY2022 ICD-10-PCS Update

by Lynn Kuehn, MS, RHIA, CCS-P, FAHIMA

The ICD-10-PCS code changes for FY 2022 include 15 “New Technology Substance” additions or changes reflecting the continued advancement in highly specific and tailored medicine to treat conditions. Understanding how these drugs work and are administered is essential for coders who wish to accurately and completely capture these treatments.

Coding professionals need to know what the substances are, what they treat, and how they are administered. Here are the four major types of new substances that will be included in the FY2022 ICD-10-PCS code set.

Monoclonal Antibodies
Monoclonal antibodies are laboratory-made proteins that mimic the immune system’s ability to fight off harmful pathogens such as viruses. They came to wide public attention in the last year when monoclonal antibodies were used as a therapy to treat COVID-19 in President Trump.

Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell Immunotherapy
Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell Immunotherapy is a cell-based gene therapy that uses the patient’s own cells to fight cancer cells. The patient’s cells are harvested and modified to recognize the cancer and kill the cancer cells. Chimeric means containing two different things, or a mixture of genetically different tissues, in one organism.

Tumor-Infiltrating Lymphocyte Immunotherapy
Tumor-Infiltrating Lymphocytes, or TIL, are lymphocytes that are removed from a patient’s tumor after it is excised and then grown in large numbers in a laboratory. They are then infused back into the patient to help the immune system kill the cancer cells by attacking them.

Drugs Treating Specific Diseases
Some drugs are developed to treat a very specific disease. The FY2022 Update has four of these drugs that treat conditions such as Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder and Hepato-renal Syndrome Type 1 through unique mechanisms.
