Self-paced course highlights key changes in ICD-10-CM Diagnostic Coding

BEDFORD MASSACHUSETTS June 5, 2013 – To help prepare Health Information Management (HIM) professionals for the upcoming October 1, 2014 ICD-10 implementation date, Libman Education has released a new online ICD-10 readiness course titled Introduction to ICD-10-CM for Coding Professionals.

The course, which highlights the key changes in ICD-10-CM diagnostic coding, teaches existing coders to translate their knowledge of ICD-9-CM to the new version of the classification system. The course also provides exercises and case studies applicable to any clinical setting, and includes new conventions and guidelines with the focus on the expanded code set.

As an online course, students save time and travel costs, and can work around their busy schedule.

“This course provides health care organizations and medical coders with the foundations that they need to successfully adapt to the major ICD-10-CM changes ahead,” said Gail I. Smith, MA, RHIA, CCS-P, course author and President of Gail I. Smith Consulting. “The course includes several learning activities to instill ICD-10-CM proficiency – including hands-on coding exercises for all clinical settings, coding of case studies with instant feedback, and highlighting the disease process. The online format allows students to take the course whenever it is convenient for their schedule.”

Those who complete Introduction to ICD-10-CM for Coding Professionals will be able to identify the characteristics of ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding; compare and contrast ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM codes; apply Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting of selected chapters that have changes; and apply clinical concepts to support coding decisions.

Course author Gail I. Smith is a well-known author and ICD-10 expert who has served as a coding consultant for over 25 years. A former president of the Ohio Health Information Management Association (OHIMA), Smith received their Professional Achievement Award in 1996 and Distinguished Member Award in 2005.

Smith also served on the Board of Directors of AHIMA from 2003 to 2006. Until recently, Smith was an Associate Professor and Director of the HIM program at the University of Cincinnati, and, before joining the University of Cincinnati, served as the Director of the HIM program at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College for 18 years.
