As a long-time coder, and now an instructor and education specialist for Libman Education courses, I have two wishes for the New Year to share with you:
My first wish is that coders across the nation embrace the challenges of their profession and vow to learn the conventions and guidelines of the classification systems in sufficient detail so they can apply them with confidence. As we all know, coding is not just assigning alphanumeric characters to diagnoses and procedures. Accuracy and completeness of coding requires ongoing training to ensure you are up-to-date.
Further I wish that managers would vow to make their coders’ education a priority not just for the benefits of challenging their staff, but also for the significant benefits that will accrue to their facility of accurate and complete coding. Not an easy task, I know. Coding managers are given so much more to do than just manage the education of their coding staff.
In the New Year; coders, let’s vow to keep on learning and managers, let’s vow to keep on training.
